Overthinking: Why Your Mind Won't Switch Off (and 7 Ways to Quiet It)

Neha Maniyar2 min read

You replay a conversation from three days ago. You draft replies to messages that haven't arrived. You lie awake running through every way tomorrow could go wrong. If that sounds familiar, you're far from alone — overthinking is one of the most common things people bring to counselling.

What overthinking is

Overthinking usually takes two forms: rumination (going over the past) and worry (rehearsing the future). Both feel like problem-solving, but they rarely lead to a decision — they just keep the mind spinning.

Why it happens

Overthinking is often the mind's attempt to feel safe and in control. It's linked with anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing and stress. Tiredness, too much screen time and not enough downtime make it louder.

7 ways to quiet an overthinking mind

  1. Name it. Silently say "I'm overthinking." Labelling the pattern creates a little distance from it.
  2. Schedule worry time. Give worries 15 minutes in the evening. When they show up earlier, note them down for later.
  3. Write it out. Putting thoughts on paper slows them down and shows you what's a real problem and what's a loop.
  4. Ask "Can I act on this today?" If yes, take one small step. If no, practise setting it down for now.
  5. Move your body. A brisk 10-minute walk changes your body's state and often the mind follows.
  6. Breathe slowly. Breathe out for longer than you breathe in — for example in for 4, out for 6 — for two minutes.
  7. Protect your sleep. Put the phone away 30 minutes before bed. Late-night scrolling feeds the loop.

When to get support

If overthinking is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or mood, counselling can help you understand what drives it and build skills to step out of it. Many people are surprised how much lighter they feel after just a few sessions.

If you'd like to talk it through, you can book a session with Neha — in Baner, Pune or online from anywhere in India.
